Trofeo Class Rules
The Spirit of the Trofeo Class
To provide a competitive class for Italian manufactured road cars with standard exterior bodywork and interior, fitted with engines up to 2 litres with no or very limited modifications to the engine, brakes and suspension.
General specification
Cars must conform to MSNZ Schedule A, and the specifications below. For class identification, each car must have a Trofeo class series banner decal.
Safety
A safety structure that complies with the requirements of Schedule A for the type of vehicle concerned must be fitted and, for all closed vehicles older than 1998, a safety cage must be fitted. A replacement seat or a competition seat and 4, 5 or 6 point safety harness complying with Schedule A must be fitted for use by the driver. Novice drivers must display 3 stripes 25mm wide by 300mm long on the top R/H corner of the rear window; after participating in 4 series race meetings, the stripes may be removed.
Bodywork and interior
Must remain standard with all interior and exterior trim fitted, appropriate for the model concerned, except that headlining and carpet may be removed and, if a safety cage is fitted, the rear seats may be removed. The front passenger seat must meet the requirements of Schedule A. Towing eyes must be fitted front and rear. Cars produced by the factory for racing are not permitted in this class.
Glazing
Window glass must remain standard. Front door window operating mechanisms must be retained and must be operable.
Engine
Must be a standard engine fitted to a car of that model code of no more than 2000 cc. Engine changes are permitted from one variant to another within that car’s model code (with Alfa Romeo 901 and 902; and 905 and 907 series cars being regarded as single model codes). Only the following additional modifications may be made:
All fuel injected engines and engines 1712cc & over
Must remain standard in all aspects including induction and ECU. An engine oil cooler or oil/water heat exchanger may be fitted, provided that it remains within the bodywork. Rebores are permitted to a maximum of 0.7 mm and aftermarket pistons may be used so long as they do not increase the compression ratio from standard. The exhaust may be modified solely to allow for permitted changes from inboard to outboard brakes. In all other cases, the exhaust must be standard.
All carburetted engines under 1712cc
Balancing of components is permitted. Porting of the heads is permitted. Camshafts are free to a maximum of 10.0 mm lift and 292 degrees duration. Rebores are permitted to a maximum of 0.7 mm and aftermarket pistons may be used so long as they do not increase the compression ratio from standard. Carburettors up to 40mm can be used and re-jetting is permitted. The air induction system to the carburetors may be modified. An engine oil cooler or oil/water heat exchanger may be fitted, provided that it remains within the bodywork. The exhaust system is free. Otherwise all components of the engine must be standard.
Transmission
Gearbox, clutch, pressure plate and differential fitted must be standard within the vehicle’s model code (with Alfa Romeo 901, 902, 905 and 907 series cars fitted with 8 valve engines being regarded as a single model code).
Suspension
The suspension must remain standard except for the following modifications. Springs and dampers may be changed. Standard Alfa 33 front suspension components, hubs and drive shafts may be fitted to allow fitment of standard Alfa 33 front brakes to Alfasuds. Anti-roll bars front and rear are free. Rubber suspension bushes may be replaced with alternative material.
Brakes
Must be factory standard except for the following. Disc pad materials and linings are free. Alfasuds and Sprints (models 901 and 902) originally fitted with inboard front brakes may be converted to outboard front brakes using standard components from the Alfa 33, with the original front-activating hand brake being modified to provide a mechanically or hydraulically actuated handbrake on the back wheels. The original inboard calipers must be used for all inboard applications. Vented front rotors are permitted as long as they are the same diameter as original rotors. Rear brake bias valve can be modified, relocated, or replaced. Brake air ducting is permitted but the ducting may not protrude beyond the bodywork and must not alter the bodywork/trim.
Wheels
Standard factory wheels fitted to cars with the same model code must be used.
Tyres
Tyres must be appropriate for the wheel size and comply with the standard for a Road Tyre or Treaded Tyre as defined in Schedule A.
Fuel
Only normal pump fuel may be used.
